The concept for the 1000 voice choir began in a charity based in Cardiff South Wales. The Hybu (a Welsh word for Promoting, supporting, facilitating) charity based in Cardiff and Newport trains young people aged 16- 18 years of age in volunteering, leadership and entrepreneurial skills. These young people are a team known as Hybu Pobl Ifanc (welsh for Promoting Young People). The charity then supports the young people to work in disadvantaged areas to provide activities and events for the benefit of those communities. >

The unusual thing about the Hybu charity is that it allows the members of its Hybu Pobl Ifanc (Promoting Young People) programme to design all the activities, evens and fundraising activities themselves.

In 2011 they created the concept of a 1000 voice choir of young people aged 8-23, accompanied by an orchestra of young people aged 18-23. They worked hard raising funds to make their idea a reality.

It has now evolved from a concert to show as famous faces have joined the choir on the stage however the stars of the show are the young people

In 2017 the celebrities involved were so overwhelmed by the event and benefit to the young people involved that they suggested the core team take the event to other towns and cities so that another 1000 young people could have the incredible experience. So it has now transformed in the Beyond Words tour.

The initial idea was two venues but this has now grown to 5 in 2019.

The Board of the Hybu charity have requested that Hybu Côr Community Interest Company (Promoting Choirs) a non profit making company develop this project

Hybu’s founder, Gill James, says: “We’ve seen a huge transformation in the confidence of the young people who take part in the choirs and orchestras.
“The experience is an amazing one for them. To be involved in such a professional event opens their eyes to what they can achieve.
“For the young people who organise the events, the skills they develop go on to have lasting impacts on their careers and lives.
“This is far from being about one concert on one night. The process changes the outlook and prospects of the thousands of young people involved in every event for years to come.”

Beyond Words #Hit the right note:

This unique event has allowed our pupils to gain insight into the world of performing at an early age. It has opened their eyes to exciting possibilities! I would highly recommend any school to take part!

My staff came back from the rehearsal in tears as the children had had such a wonderful time. We are in an area of severe deprivation so many children never leave the village. After the concert itself three of the children recorded in their diaries that - it had been the best day of their lives.

I couldn’t believe I was given so much responsibility and was able to take such a lead and make decisions during the concert event. I learnt so much about working with people and the joy of giving others a good time but the thing I learnt more about myself. I know now if I believe in myself, and my team, anything can happen.
